Lexxica won first prize in a start-up venture business competition in Beijing China. The competition was held in conjunction with a major industry conference entitled "Global Mobile Computing Conference." These are the award winning slides Lexxica's Guy Cihi presented to the competition judges and to thousands of conference attendees. TOEIC Vocabulary – Secrets Revealed Cihi, G., Culligan, B. (2011) Presentation given at ETJ Congress and National JALT Conference.
Detailed analysis of a 1.25 million-word TOEIC corpus consisting of actual TOEIC tests and high-quality practice tests reveals that more than one third of the high-frequency vocabulary words commonly occurring on almost every TOEIC test are not highly frequent words in a 500 million-word corpus of General English. The authors suggest that ETS, the creators of TOEIC and many other high-stakes tests, are using esoteric vocabulary to create difficult 'Items' (questions) for the purpose of facilitating more accurate scoring.
